Welcome to The Imagination Lab!
Online Platform for Creative Development
After many months of joyous planning, I am thrilled to be able to welcome you to the Imagination Lab. Ultimately the ambitious vision for the Lab is to grow a framework to support and develop powerful creative work. It'll do this by stimulating experimentation and interaction to incubate projects and then provide the support to bring them to life and the momentum to reach a broad audience. The first phase of the Lab in building this framework is the introduction of high quality, intensive online courses. The courses are primarily interactive and will provide hands-on coaching in Music, Media, Visual Arts, Design and Performance. The courses are distinguished by being skill based and offering a high level of expertise from the instructor underpinned by a structure of cutting edge educational methods. Michael Watt Feb 2023

Michael Watt has been an active educator and musician for more than two decades. His broad range of interests and skills grow out of a fascination with creative communication in multiple disciplines and media. It was while studying Architecture that Michael’s piano performance career began taking off, which motivated him to make the shift to a degree in Music performance. While an undergraduate, Michael performed extensively as a soloist, chamber musician and accompanist in concerts, broadcasts and theatre shows across South Africa. In addition to working with classical singers, he also took advanced vocal training, giving him a solid foundation in vocal technique. His focus on piano performance took him to the UK where he was able to build piano technique through touring, performing, and collaborating on performance projects. After returning to South Africa, Michael completed a MA and shifted focus to education by lecturing at Wits before finding his most rewarding work in the field of interdisciplinary Arts and performance education at The Ridge School, St Mary’s Waverley, Redhill School before founding The Imagination Lab in 2023.

Vision

It almost goes without saying that all the arts are primarily about developing creativity. The Imagination Lab courses are project based and foster freedom and curiosity to explore, interpret and express ideas without dogma.

All the tasks and projects are fun and developmentally age appropriate. The platforms are designed to be nurturing, safe and supportive environments, free from anxiety so that no one is ever put on the spot.

It is a global platform open to anyone. The goal is to create work from a position of awareness of local and global problems for your creative work to have a positive effect on the world.

Throughout the courses, the skills, ideas and techniques you learn will be angled to drive you toward your goals. It is always about knowing how you can use the skills and ideas in real projects.

Each course is 12 weeks long and during that time, you will develop routines and habits to continually develop and grow your skills. Creative skills which are fulfilling, lifelong skills.

These skills are also thinking patterns - patterns of asking the right questions and the courage to ask difficult questions to build depth and expressive complexity in your work. Every student needs to attend the weekly Q&A online discussions.

The Lab is an experimental space where you will be juggling multiple parameters. Balancing contradictory perspectives, grappling with notions of context, building a secure foundation while challenging your limits, relying on the tried and tested and shaking up with the new.

In a nutshell its about expanding your possibilities with nothing 'boxed in'. For more information, please get in touch by emailing info.theimaginationlab.online to take the conversation further. Looking forward to hearing from you!
